FAQs

Let’s answer some questions for curious minds … 🧠

What is avant-garde film?

Avant-garde film refers to films that are made outside of the mainstream production process. Avant-garde or experimental films play with animation, documentary, storytelling, and the boundaries of film technology. Though these films may seem unfamiliar, avant-garde films have inspired many of the movies and shows we know and love today. An avant-garde film can be abstract, highly personal, poetic, silly, good, awful, funny, revolutionary, boring or artistic. What makes it avant-garde is its ability to make us rethink what a film is and what going to the cinema can be.

What is a microcinema?

Microcinemas are the spaces where avant-garde films have historically been shown. Often small theaters with less than 60 seats, they are spaces for filmgoers to watch new films and meet avant-garde filmmakers. There are many microcinemas around the country, many of which do children’s programming, documentary showcases, filmmaker Q&As and more!

Why is avant-garde film important?

Avant-garde film is important because it reminds us to use our imagination and to enjoy the results of an experiment even if it’s not what we expected. Filmmaking is for everyone, and avant-garde films remind us that our only limit is our own creativity!

What is this event?

The Children’s Cinema is an afternoon to explore and experience unique, kid-friendly films! The event will begin with a program of avant-garde films that are mostly animation based, colorful, and musical. Then we’ll make our own film together (without even using a camera), and we’ll end the day watching our masterpiece.

Who are we?
